Report focuses on Crown’s efforts to shrink its own environmental footprint while supporting customers to achieve success with their own sustainability efforts
Crown Equipment, one of the world’s largest material handling companies, released its 2013 ecologic™ report highlighting the company’s global efforts to minimise waste, manage energy use and maximise product and facility lifespan. The 2013 report can be downloaded here.
While the report once again focuses on Crown’s progress with its facilities and supply chain, this year’s edition also emphasises the company’s successful effort to design, engineer and manufacture material handling equipment and solutions that help customers’ sustainability efforts via increased energy efficiency that saves valuable resources and cuts customer costs. This includes such products as the TSP 7000 VNA Forklift Series featuring regenerative lowering technology which reduces energy consumption and increases run time by up to 15 per cent. Another example is Crown’s InfoLink® fleet management software that helps customers monitor the efficient use of their forklift fleet and total operations. Only last month Crown Infolink won the International Forklift of the Year award for the Forklift Truck Solutions category having been selected by 12 independent European journalists.
“Infolink enables more efficient use of the forklifts, gives a complete overview of equipment usage and because of the safety related impact monitoring, the operators drive more carefully and we have less damage”, said Gerrit Viveen, Head of the Technical Department, Yamaha Netherlands, France and Italy.
Crown evaluates the ecological and human health impact of its products during their life cycle, which helps the company understand the cradle-to-grave environmental performance of the product design and manufacturing processes. Design and engineering teams also conduct human-factors research by test-driving forklifts, researching trends and talking to expert users. Through this research, the company discovers innovative ideas that benefit customers by leading to the design of more safe, reliable, durable and energy-efficient forklifts. This effort to build sustainability into the innovative process is being noticed and appreciated by customers.
“While it is crucial that we as a company make informed sustainable choices and implement strategies around reducing, reusing and recycling, it is equally as important that we help our customers achieve success with their own sustainability efforts,” said Brian Duffy, Crown’s director of corporate environmental and manufacturing safety. “The largest impact regarding energy consumption in the lifecycle of a forklift occurs during operation. With energy efficiency as a key element of a greener supply chain, it is important to provide customers with products and technologies that will help reduce energy use and lower their carbon footprint.”
