Third party logistics company utilizes operational metrics to optimize fleet size and increase productivity

Kane Is Able (KANE), headquartered in Scranton, PA, is a national, third party logistics (3PL) company that helps manufacturers and their retail partners efficiently and effectively distribute goods throughout the United States. Since its founding in 1930, the company has grown to include a network of 25 warehousing and cross dock facilities totaling over 8 million square feet, along with a transportation team that services Maine to Virginia.

KANE employs a lean operational philosophy, which aims to maximize the productivity of every asset. With its prior forklift fleet, KANE frequently experienced downtime for forklift repair that was often extended by poor parts and service tech availability. Over time, KANE acquired additional forklifts to help compensate for this downtime. Management suspected they weren’t operating the fleet in lean fashion; however, they had no method to validate the suspicion or quantify the solution.

The company’s first order of business was to look for a more reliable forklift supplier to help eliminate downtime for repairs. KANE selected Crown as their new supplier and opted for a full maintenance plan, which covers planned maintenance as well as routine repairs. While the change resulted in far less downtime for the company, it was still difficult to gauge how the improved reliability affected the company’s overall fleet requirements.

KANE’s management was introduced to Crown’s InfoLink® operator and fleet management system and soon realized they could use the system to capture and analyze fleet utilization data and make informed decisions to optimize their fleet size. The InfoLink system enabled management to understand how each forklift was being used and, within just two weeks, they identified an application in which six forklifts could be eliminated.
