Crown Equipment to Showcase Award-Winning Employee Safety Program

NEW BREMEN, Ohio (October 4, 2012) Crown Equipment Corporation, one of the world’s leading material handling companies, will share the company’s successful behavior-based approach to safety at the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Council meeting in San Diego on October 4. Brian Duffy, Crown’s director of corporate environmental and manufacturing safety, will provide an overview of the program and discuss best practices and lessons learned.

The presentation, “Behavior Based Safety – One Company’s New Approach,” examines Crown’s SafeSteps program, which combines employee observation, feedback and positive reinforcement with active management support to focus on the behavioral aspects of safety. Since its inception in 2005, Crown’s SafeSteps program has created a culture of continuous improvement that has resulted in a significant reduction in both recordable and lost time injury rates. The program has earned numerous industry awards and national recognitions for safety excellence. For instance, the SafeSteps program contributed to Crown’s 2010 Occupational Excellence Achievement Award from the National Safety Council.

“Safety of our employees is a top priority, and using tools like the SafeSteps program to promote safe behaviors is critical for our success, especially in manufacturing environments,” said Duffy. “Manufacturing facilities are in constant motion, and employees observing each other and providing vital feedback on safe and unsafe work habits provides improvements in accident reduction and employee engagement in the safety process. Implementing behavior-based safety programs such as SafeSteps helps to ensure that safe operating habits are part of daily operations. When successful, organizations can expect to benefit from improved productivity and efficiency.”

The MAPI EHS Council meeting brings together environmental, health and safety executives from leading manufacturers to share best practices on remediation, EHS talent management, healthy workforce management and creating a safety culture.
